Go east on US 64 to Morgantown. On I-40 go east for 2 miles to Exit 105. Go on NC18 south for 11 miles, turn right into Sugarloaf Rd, go 14.2 miles and turn left on old NC18 south and follow signs to South Mountain State Park
Take the High Shoals Falls Loop Trail, which travels along the JacobsForkRiver to the base of the HighShoalsFalls, a beautiful, crystal-clear waterfall. The trail continues with many steps to the top of the falls before looping around and returning to our trailhead. Wear some sturdy shoes and bring a trail snack and water.
The CCC developed the land in the 1930’s. They constructed trails and cleaned up riverbeds after the gold rush, which had declined in the early 1920’s. The park has a size of about 17000 acres.
